Biodynamic Gardening Principles

Biodynamic Gardening: Grow Healthy Plants and Amazing Produce by DK Publishing 2015

This book is an introduction to Biodynamic Gardening, all its facets, entry level instruction, along with advanced principles and recipes. Whew! this book has it all! The photographs are coffee-table amazing, and the book is reader friendly.

Biodynamic Gardening take Organic Gardening to the next level. It is all about soil health the how the plants and animals integrate into the garden plans. Biodynamic Gardning also includes the production and application of nine homeopathic sprays. Instead of using these sprays absolutely as prescribed, DLG uses components. These are our substitute for commercial sprays and fertilizers. This is where we differ from Biodynamic Gardening in its purist form.

Another huge aspect of Biodynamic Gardening is the use of the lunar calendar. As the moon treks through each constellation, the amount of moisture changes which makes certain days are better for certain gardening tasks. By planning ahead, water is maximized along with growth and plant health. For centuries, all cultures have known about the moon's pull on the tides and underground water supply. The farmers from ancient times onward have maximized the natural elements.

Dockery Lane Gardens follows the Dynamic Gardening Principles and our family has been Dynamic Gardening for decades. Learn more about how we garden or for Dynamic Gardening in this beautiful DK Publishing edition.

Compost Science for Gardeners

Just published in January, Robert Pavlis explains composting and soil science simply and efficiently. This book explains which materials are best for the compost and more. This is an ideal reference book to have on hand!

Be certain to flag chapter 4 as it lists all types of compostable materials and the results. Many gardening tips available online and in other books will advocate for various items to be added to the compost. This is usually a noble gesture to keep items out of the landfill. However, many of the items will not break down in a timely manner, then they are of no value to the compost being created. Pavlis clarifies various materials and the results over time. It's all about making the best compost to achieve the best gardening results!

Pavlis packs a ton of information into this book, but it is readable and easy to understand. He offers instructions and tips to ensure success.

Dockery Lane Gardens maintains several compost piles. We tried to keep some high Carbon based items out of the landfill with the result being a much longer period of time to make compost.  Some of out trial-and-error incidents wouldn't have happened if we had met Pavlis sooner!

Dockery Lane Gardens highly recommends Compost Science for Gardeners. What have you learned from Pavlis?
